Evaluating Students the Right Way

Standards‐based grading and reporting (SBGR) allows teachers to report back to students and families a more accurate depiction of a students achievements and shortcomings. As a teacher, I would want to show students an accurate picture of what they have learned and what they need to improve on. I find it astonishing how teachers in today's society still have trouble with responding to a students grades. I am a college student and still struggle with knowing what I need to improve on from a professors horrible feedback. It takes a great professor to sit down with a students and help them in their time of need. I want to praise my students in every chance they get on improvement. I want their confidence to shoot to the stars as I praise their work and make them work harder when I tell them they must improve. Like it says in the Secondary Standards‐ Based Grading and Reporting Handbook, "When a student makes progress they feel motivated and more successful because enhancing perceived competence is motivating in and of itself," (2).

Homework, every students favorite thing ever. Oh what a hilarious joke. As much as students do not like it, it is necessary for them to achieve a great grade. To get students to improve on their grading, homework is essential. Homework should not be handed to students as a piece of paper they must accomplish or they will face the consequences. Yes, homework should be required for a great grade, just not in an overwhelming situation. Homework should be handed to students as an aid for achievement and understanding of the material in the class. As a literature teacher in the making, you must know that literature is a tough concept. For even the greatest minds of science still struggle with literature. So yeah, it is gonna be tough for high school students. Literature homework should not overwhelm these students. Literature homework should focus on how to decent the readings, interpret the themes and tones, and helping these students present the material in a professional/fun manner.
