My First Graphic Novel
I get this feeling that people believe that reading a book with pictures in it isn’t considered a book that should be read in high school or colleges, and I would respectfully disagree with that. In fact I might go as far as saying that we future teachers and professors should push students of tomorrow to read graphic novels. Yes, they are quick read and they tend to have pictures in them, but there is much more into graphic novels. Such as its benefits for visual learners, great depth in language and the use of many mediums.
My first graphic novel that I received was called Batman: Year One. Even as a kid, with not much knowledge on literature, I could tell that this wasn’t just a comic book. This was literature at its finest. This story made me into the nerd I am today, even I can tell that at a young age that this graphic novel does such a great job capturing the corruption of Gotham city with realistic attributes that you don’t see that much in comic books at the time. The story of this graphic novel was more other Hook. From the perspective of both Lieutenant Gordon and Batman, we get to see their first year journey in the chaotic crime filled city that we all know and adore, kinda, from these graphic novels. Just like novels, these graphic novels transcend into pop culture, such as tv and movies. In fact Batman: Year One was the prime resource into creating the highly acclaimed Batman Begins (2005). This and many more graphic novels are bringing young readers into the amazing visual world of graphic novels.
